Almost All Integer Matrices Have No Integer Eigenvalues

In a recent issue of this MONTHLY, Hetzel, Liew, and Morrison [4] pose a rather natural question: what is the probability that a random n× n integer matrix is diagonalizable over the field of rational numbers? Since there is no uniform probability distribution on Z, we need to exercise some care in interpreting this question. Specifically, for an integer k ≥ 1, let Ik = {−k,−k + 1, . . . , k − ...

Eigenvalues of symmetric tridiagonal interval matrices revisited

In this short note, we present a novel method for computing exact lower and upper bounds of a symmetric tridiagonal interval matrix. Compared to the known methods, our approach is fast, simple to present and to implement, and avoids any assumptions Our construction explicitly yields those matrices for which particular lower and upper bounds are attained.

Pseudo-Tournament Matrices and Their Eigenvalues

Abstract. A tournament matrix and its corresponding directed graph both arise as a record of the outcomes of a round robin competition. An n × n complex matrix A is called h-pseudo-tournament if there exists a complex or real nonzero column vector h such that A+ A∗ = hh∗ − I . This class of matrices is a generalisation of well-studied tournament-like matrices such as h-hypertournament matrices,...

The Number of 2× 2 Integer Matrices Having a Prescribed Integer Eigenvalue

Random matrices arise in many mathematical contexts, and it is natural to ask about the properties that such matrices satisfy. If we choose a matrix with integer entries at random, for example, what is the probability that it will have a particular integer as an eigenvalue, or an integer eigenvalue at all? If we choose a matrix with real entries at random, what is the probability that it will h...

Bounds on Real Eigenvalues and Singular Values of Interval Matrices

We study bounds on real eigenvalues of interval matrices, and our aim is to develop fast computable formulae that produce as-sharp-as-possible bounds. We consider two cases: general and symmetric interval matrices. We focus on the latter case, since on one hand such interval matrices have many applications in mechanics and engineering, and on the other many results from classical matrix analysi...
